a true story of switched at birth

Read my last blog to hear from someone who was switched at birth. I was shocked & saddened to read his story. I followed his link to understand more. I think the book would explain a lot of questions.

It is something I thought of when I had Shannon because back in those days it happened. I was paranoid about having John remember her face, ears etc. Thankfully today they have a lot more security in place but I'll bet it still happens.

Rylee update: She is still having diarrhea and yeast infection, it is so sad. She is miserable. It ticks me off the doctors don't warn you this will happen when you take antibiotics and have you treat it as you are taking the stuff. I sure hope she gets back on track. My heart breaks everyday.

Like you said, most modern hospitals don't separate baby and mother for exactly the reason you say (well, they say it's for other reasons, but I'm sure this has to be one of them), but I'm sure mis ups do still occassionally happen.

Poor Rylee! So, she was taking an antibiotic for the 'rhea and the side effct was a yeast infection, or the 'rhea and yeast infection are both side effects of taking the AB for something else?

I know antibiotics are one of modern medicine's greatest triumphs, but I swear, for some people, they seem to cause more trouble than they're worth!

What a heartwrenching story! I can't imagine the agonies a family would go through in a case like that.

And recently I was HORRIFIED to hear of a story where a couple was impregnated with the wrong fetus! Can you believe it, there you are growing someone else's baby! That would also be awful. In this case the family was going to give the child to the biological parents at birth. How wrenching that would be, to get excited that you finally got pregnant after so many problems and then to find out it is not your child.

Hope Rylee gets better soon!

We use the baby lojack. The little transmitter on the babies leg plays a little song if it is the right mom. If not the thing starts alarming and says " Baby Smith with wrong mother." It also alarms if the band is to loose, if the tag is tampered with or if the wind is blowing. Once the thing alarms, all doors on both L&D and post partum lock down and no one gets in or out. If a baby gets within 10 feet of the doors without the nurses ok, the doors automatically lock down. We also tag the baby daddy, so the baby can go to the nursery. It is rare that baby is away from either parent.

We have talked about getting nurses the slings so that if the parents want to get some rest, we can just wear the babies and still get all of our work done.

Hi Connie!

Thank you for leaving a comment on my blog. It was a busy week. My husband and I had to stay at home for three days as Rinus had a bit of a blocked nose and we did not want to take any chances by sending him to the babyhouse. As it is the weather in South Africa has been horrid for the past week. It has been raining and it is just cold! We had an average temperature of 11 degrees whereas in summer it should be 30 or so.

When I was in Neo Natal it happened that they received two babies that was due to be adopted. There was nothing wrong with the babies except that this is apparantly what they do to keep them save until the adoptive parents can have them.

I found it strange but after some thought I decided that it was a good idea since NICU is rather safe with only the parents that are allowed.

I hope your grandchild is feeling better today. One feels so helpless when they are not well.

Take Care

Ronel
